The summer camp internship experience offers:

  • Hands-on experience for future career opportunities

  • Mentorship opportunities with theatre professionals

  • Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access training

Summer interns will have the option to receive community service hours or a modest stipend for their work.. We are also happy to provide letters of recommendation.

About Summer Internship Program

Portola Valley Theatre Conservatory's high school internship program provides invaluable artistic training to young theatre makers, building a sense of community that will remains foundational long after the end of summer. We offer opportunities to experience the inner-workings of theatre production from every angle. Each of our internships includes a uniquely hands-on experience coupled with mentorship and professional development.

Interns are integral to PVTC's summer camp experience. Interns work in every department and gain valuable professional skills building strong relationships with students and staff. Internships offer leadership experience, designed to provide interns participates with training, support, and experience needed to achieve personal and career goals.  Even during this unusual unprecedented time of COVID, interns will be given creative opportunities and participate in memorable camp traditions. 

Mandatory Intern Training Dates:

  • May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th from 10-11:30am  

  • There will also be a show-specific training May 31st - June 11th (date & time TBD)

 

Junior Staff Positions

Positions listed below with an * indicate they are also available as junior staff positions. For those recently graduated seniors looking for a larger leadership challenge, you are welcome to apply for a junior staff position in lieu of an internship by filling out an application form HERE.

SUMMER 2021 INTERNSHIPS

ADMIN

  • Serve as the intern point-person for our digital program, including keeping track of camper and staff/intern bios

  • Update tracking for camp traditions like daily royalty slides, etc.

  • Take morning attendance and communicating absences to staff and interns

  • Label and file photos and videos that are taken throughout camp

  • Work with staff to prepare print and fundraising materials for camp-related development campaigns

  • Collaborate with staff leads to convey important reminders to campers/families

  • Help facilitate other communication avenues (such as a camp blog) based on interest

  • Curate visuals for pre-show engagement materials (in collaboration with the social media intern)

Session I, II, III

ART CREATOR

  • Create art for performances as needed, including stills (drawings, digital art, etc.) and animated sequences

  • Create art pieces for incorporation in the program, such as insert pages and decorative graphics (in collaboration with social media and admin interns)

  • Create art pieces for rotation group projects (in collaboration with editors and rotation leaders)

  • Create art for PVTC camp, including virtual backgrounds or on-campus signs (some of this work will be expected before camp for use on the first day)

Session I, II, III

NOTE: There will be not be opportunities to engage with rotation groups for Session III art internships

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (AD)*

  • Support director in rehearsals (running lines, “staging” small moments, etc.)

  • Provide notes to campers (both acting and on elements of filming like camera placement, etc.)

  • Lead the review of scenes and songs in breakout rooms to help actors feel confident

  • Help facilitate tablework and discussions about thematic elements of the show

Session II, III

ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER (ASM)*

  • Take detailed line notes during runs and collaborate with SMs to distribute notes to actors and staff members

  • Take notes on blocking and other staging ideas to maintain an up-to-date record

  • Contribute to daily documents that track filming needs (costumes, props/sets, camera setup, etc.)

  • Record and filming moments as necessary (which will include filming staff and interns at work for PVTC’s records)

  • Take attendance for rotations throughout the day

Session I, II, III

CHOREOGRAPHY*

  • Create your own choreography for moments in songs and facilitating rotations to teach the choreography

  • Assist in dance rehearsals lead by the choreographer, which might include taking/giving notes, modeling choreography, and monitoring the chat for questions

  • Review material with students in breakout rooms before we capture footage or perform

Session II

COSTUMES

  • Learn from the costumes designer to create specific costume designs for each actor

  • Check (and fix, as needed) costume looks prior to filming sections or performances

  • Help lead design rotations (monitoring chats, modeling projects, etc.) with teaching artists

  • Facilitate at least one independent costumes rotation for campers with the support of the costume designer

  • Depending on needs, create costumes kits to distribute to campers prior to the start of the session

Session I, II

NOTE: There will be one costumes intern each session who might work on multiple shows at once

DRAMATURGY*

  • Conduct research for each show (themes, history, source material, etc.) as needed

  • Create a dramaturgy presentation for campers and facilitate 1-2 rotations to teach the material

  • Write dramaturgy notes for our digital program

  • Curate content (language, images, etc.) for our digital pre-show engagement material

  • Additional responsibilities for full time position:

  • Facilitate talkbacks after performances and during-camp conversations with guest artists

  • Research facts related to lessons and points in the devising process for daily share-outs with the cast and crew

  • Collaborate with IDEA director for additional discussions about Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility with PVTC’s summer programming

  • Additional responsibilities for Session III Internship:

  • Conduct research about this history of musical theatre and dramaturgy for musicals

  • Collaborate with staff to facilitate workshops on musical theatre dramaturgy

Session I, III (part-time or full-time)

EDITOR

  • Create animated sequences for certain moments in the show as needed

  • Learn about the process of storyboarding for filmed performances

  • Serve as the creator for one of three video projects: blooper reel, performance credits, or a camp photo journal

  • Edit together rotation group projects (in collaboration with art creators and rotation leaders)

Session I, II, III

NOTE: Editing internships will be part time positions for Session III with a greater emphasis on video creation without rotation group components

HAIR

  • Learn from the hair designer to create specific wig/hair designs for each actor

  • Check (and fix, as needed) hair looks prior to filming sections or performances

  • Help lead design rotations (monitoring chats, modeling projects, etc.) with teaching artists

  • Facilitate at least one independent hair rotation for campers with the support of the hair designer

  • Depending on needs, create hair kits to distribute to campers prior to the start of the session

Session I, II

NOTE: There will be one hair intern each session who might work on multiple shows at once

MAKE UP

  • Learn from the makeup designer to create specific makeup designs for each actor

  • Check (and fix, as needed) makeup looks prior to filming sections or performances

  • Help lead design rotations (monitoring chats, modeling projects, etc.) with teaching artists

  • Facilitate at least one independent makeup rotation for campers with the support of the makeup designer

  • Depending on needs, create makeup kits to distribute to campers prior to the start of the session

Session I, II

NOTE: There will be one makeup intern each session who might work on multiple shows at once

PROPS / SETS

  • Learn from the props/set designer to create specific costume designs for each actor

  • Help lead design rotations (monitoring chats, modeling projects, etc.) with teaching artists

  • Facilitate at least one independent projects rotation for campers with the support of the props/Sst designer

  • Depending on needs, creating props/set kits to distribute to campers prior to the start of the session

Session I, II

NOTE: There will be one props/set intern each session who might work on multiple shows at once

ROTATION GROUP LEADER

  • Facilitate group projects and activities, including assorted games, group cheers, and a digital group project (in collaboration with Art and Editing Interns)

  • Lead a variety of games for campers based on the needs of the show (such as building characters, boosting energy, increasing focus, etc.)

  • Host break and lunch-time digital rooms with campers from across groups (campers will have the option to stay on for these times each day)

  • Help maintain morning and afternoon traditions like sticker charts, corkboard and countdown, and the camp skit

  • Facilitate afternoon activities including games and fun crafting projects (campers will have the option to stay on for these times each day)

  • While not required, interns are also welcome to follow their groups through online rotations for extra support and bonding time

Session I, II, III

SCRIPT SUPERVISOR / ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (AD)

  • Help the playwright and director track the development of the script, which might include maintaining a script change log and/or updating the script draft

  • Learn about the process of storyboarding for filming

  • Support directors in rehearsals (running lines, “staging” small moments, etc.)

  • Review filming setup and provide feedback, including prep for live filming and submitted self-tapes

  • Provide notes to campers (both acting and on elements of filming like camera placement, etc.)

  • Lead the review of scenes and songs in breakout rooms to help actors feel confident

Session II, III

NOTE: This position will likely start with more script responsibilities and shift to a more traditional AD role as the script is solidified

SOCIAL MEDIA

  • Collaborate with PVTC staff to create a social media plan for the summer using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter

  • Make graphics and social media posts (using platforms like Canva) to be approved by PVTC staff

  • Capture screenshots and videos in rehearsal rooms to feature on social media platforms

  • Help facilitate other communication avenues (such as a camp blog) based on interest

  • Upload student, staff, and intern photos for use in posts and internal camp materials

  • Curate visuals for pre-show engagement materials (in collaboration with the admin intern)

Session I, II, III

  • DIRECTOR - High School Musical Theatre Camp (Show TBD)
    REPORTS TO: Producing Artistic Director OVERSEES: Rehearsal Room Interns WAGES: $28/hour PROJECT DATES: Production meetings monthly on Tuesdays at 1pm starting in January Auditions May 1 from 6-9pm Callbacks May 7 from 1-5pm Camp meets 9am-3pm daily from July 17 through August 4 Performances August 3 & 4 at 7pm and August 5 at 5pm, followed by strike WHO SHOULD APPLY? Directors who have demonstrated experience working with high school actors who center creative expression, commitment to IDEA, and support student growth and development in a collaborative environment.   • STAGE MANAGERS - All Summer
    PVTC camp stage managers orchestrate the behind-the-scenes “choreography” of each summer camp show. Stage managers are intimately acquainted with the vision of the designers and directors carry out administrative duties to ensure the success of the vision. Stage managers are responsible for designing a smooth rehearsal and performance process. The ideal candidate has stage management or equivalent experience and has worked in an educational setting as a stage manager, though we can also train those with a desire to learn, including college students and early career professionals. Successful applicants are organized, detail-oriented, and possess excellent and efficient communication skills. Applicants must be collaborative, inclusive, creative, and interested in mentoring high school students through a stage management process. PVTC uses Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, and Dropbox for all camps. REPORTS TO: Production Manager OVERSEES: Assistant Stage Manager Interns (high school students) WAGES: $25-$28/hour PROJECT DATES (Applicants can apply for 1 or 2 projects that do not overlap) Production meetings monthly on Tuesdays at 1pm starting in January Prep as needed throughout the winter/spring June 19 through July 15 (Musical with K-8th graders) July 17 through July 27 (Outdoor devising camp with 4th-8th graders) July 17 through August 4 (Musical camp with high school students) WHO SHOULD APPLY? Experience in stage management is a plus, though we can train interested parties. The most important qualities for stage managers are organizational skills, patience, a friendly attitude, time management skills, excellent notetaking, and strong interpersonal skills. Basic knowledge of backstage theatre is useful. Experience working with youth is a plus. PREP SEASON (PART-TIME JANUARY THROUGH MID-JUNE, can be remote) Attend monthly production meetings for each show you are managing Take notes for each meeting, including action items for staff and send out notes after meeting Attend all-staff trainings and meetings Participate in one-on-one calls with the camp director or other staff as needed Collaborate with director to create camp schedule and cross-refrence camp schedules within the same session Plan and facilitate training sessions for intern mentees, and help interns set appropriate goals, and train interns on specific projects/tools that will be used for their camp Help with camp set-up, which might include preparing camper kits or setting up the PVTC space DURING CAMP (FULL-TIME DURING THE SUMMER CAMP SESSION, in person) Attend rehearsals and oversee the following tasks, either by completing them yourself or mentoring ASMs through the process: Take notes on blocking and other staging ideas to maintain an up-to-date record Record and filming moments as necessary (which will include filming staff and interns at work for PVTC’s records) Spiking the stage Keeping props organized and working with student actors to identify safe places for prop storage Maintain the rehearsal schedule incorporating changes from the director, designers, or other rotation leaders Send out daily production report summarizing work accomplished, questions, and needs to ensure the success of the show Attend daily post-camp meetings to debrief the day and report on production progress Communicate department-based announcements to the managing director for emails home to campers Work closely with director, designers, and technical specialist to lead a successful rehearsal process and tech week Mentor assistant stage managers in the high school internship program through their role by engaging them in paperwork, line notes, prop & costume checks; teaching them to capture blocking; and setting them up as student stage manager leaders Record intern progress, accomplishments, and growth areas throughout camp as well as provide a brief written report about each intern at the end of camp Collaborates with other instructors to write student/intern congratulatory cards Participate in strike for relevant productions Following final performances, fill out post-camp feedback survey Attend post-mortem discussion TO APPLY Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest and resume to PVTC.     PVTC summer costume designers & instructors collaborate with an experienced and enthusiastic creative team to plan for and execute a summer camp production. The costume designer & instructor is responsible for creating the clothing “look” for all campers and works closely with the hair and makeup designers to develop a cohesive character profile. Successful applicants are driven, independent, excellent communicators, collaborative, inclusive, visionary, and interested in developing the whole student. PVTC uses Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, and Dropbox for all camps. REPORTS TO: Artistic Director / Production Manager OVERSEES: Design Interns WAGES $28/hour PROJECT DATES: Production meetings monthly on Tuesdays at 1pm starting in January Prep as needed throughout the winter/spring Camp runs June 20-July 15 Performances are July 13, 14, 15 Strike, cleaning, and restock will happen after the show closes WHO SHOULD APPLY? Costume designers who have demonstrated experience working with youth in the theatre are ideal. This role includes designing costumes, renting/pulling items, building costumes, overseeing college assistants, high school interns, and sometimes very young performers. Costume designers/instructors are responsible for the entire costume department during a show, including construction, room organization, fittings, quick change plans, and creativity! Applicants should be organized, feel confident mentoring interns and assistants, and enjoy working with children. PREP SEASON (PART-TIME MARCH THROUGH MID-JUNE) Attend monthly production meetings for each show you’re designing Attend all-staff meetings and trainings Participate in one-on-one calls with director or other staff to plan activities as needed Create inspiration boards to share in production meetings Create design templates for each character/camp Provide a list of materials needed for camper kits in a timely manner and a list of which actors need which items Provide a list of “costume basics” to be provided by student families in advance of camp, including links to sample clothing Provide a list of scheduling requests for director/stage manager Plan and facilitate training sessions for intern mentees, and help interns set appropriate goals, and train interns on specific projects/tools that will be used for their camp DURING CAMP (FULL-TIME DURING THE SUMMER CAMP SESSION) Lead costume design rotations for your show.   • PROPS DESIGNER/MANAGER - Outdoor Devising Camp & TBD Musical with High School Students
    The props designers/manager collaborates with an experienced and enthusiastic creative team to plan for and execute a summer camp production. The props designer/manager is responsible for creating the props for each production, as well as guiding campers through the creation of specific props and other creative projects if relevant. They work closely with the set designers to develop a cohesive world for the show. Successful applicants are driven, independent, excellent communicators, collaborative, inclusive, visionary, and interested in developing the whole student. PVTC uses Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, and Dropbox for all camps. REPORTS TO: Production Manager OVERSEES: Technical interns WAGES $25-$28 depending on experience PROJECT DATES: Production meetings monthly on Tuesdays at 1pm starting in January Prep as needed throughout the winter/spring Camp runs July 17-August 4 Performances are July 26 & 27 for devising and August 3, 4, and 5 for the musical Strike, cleaning, and restock will happen after the show closes WHO SHOULD APPLY? Props designers who have experience designing and managing props on a quick deadline are ideal for PVTC shows. Props designers are part-time, but should be available to repair props or acquire new props throughout the process as needed PREP SEASON (PART-TIME JANUARY THROUGH MID-JUNE) Attend monthly production meetings for each show you’re working on Attend all-staff meetings and trainings Participate in one-on-one calls with director or other staff Create inspiration boards to share in production meetings Create prop list & proposals for each camp show Provide a list of materials needed if any projects are happening with campers or interns Provide a list of scheduling requests for director/stage manager DURING CAMP (PART-TIME DURING THE SUMMER CAMP SESSION) Procure props by pulling, building, renting, or purchasing If relevant - lead prop design rotations with campers and/or interns.   • COSTUME ASSISTANT
    PVTC costume assistants work alongside the experienced and enthusiastic costume design team to plan for and execute a summer camp production. The costume assistant will help designers keep paperwork updated, assist with fittings, and execute alterations for existing pieces. They will also have ownership over execution of certain designs and may be asked to sew, hot glue, add velcro, buttons, snaps, or add embellishments to costumes. At times, costume assistants may have the opportunity to design parts of costumes. They will help with costume pulls, restocking, and keeping the costume room and rack organized. While costume assistants will interact with campers, they are not expected to lead instructional rotations unless they are looking to develop that skill. Successful applicants are driven, independent, excellent communicators, collaborative, inclusive, visionary, and interested in developing the whole student. PVTC uses Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, and Dropbox for all camps. This is an ideal job for a college student or early career professional. REPORTS TO: Costume Designer WAGES: $20-$28/hour depending on experience PROJECT DATES: Production meetings monthly on Tuesdays at 1pm starting in January Prep as needed throughout the winter/spring Camp dates are June 20-August 11 Who should apply? Young professionals or college students interested in costume design for youth theatre are ideal candidates for this position. While experience is not necessary, assistants will be asked to sew on a sewing machine, hand show, cut, hot glue, and get creative with all kinds of materials. Assistants should also be able to update simple spreadsheets and other paperwork.   • ASSISTANT CHOREOGRAPHER - "Spongebob The Musical (Youth Edition)"
    The assistant choreographer is responsible for reinforcing the instruction of our choreographer to help the cast shine! During your time at camp, you will help the choreographer by leading or demonstrating warm-ups and basic musical theatre steps. You are responsible for knowing all choreography tracks in the show and reviewing/giving notes to actors in the absence of the choreographer. Assistant choreographers may have the opportunity to choreograph portions of songs on their own with mentorship from the choreographer or director. We seek assistant choreographers who have a passion both for dance and for working with students of a range of ages and abilities. Experience in youth theatre is a plus. Individuals who are collaborative, flexible, and creative thrive at PVTC. This is an ideal job for a college student or early career professional. REPORTS TO: Producing Artistic Director WAGES: $20-28/hour depending on experience PROJECT DATES: Production meetings monthly on Tuesdays at 1pm starting in January Prep as needed throughout the winter/spring Camp dates are June 20-July 15 Who should apply? Young professionals or college students interested in choreography for youth are ideal candidates. Working alongside a professional choreographer, assistants will have the chance to learn about approaches to teaching dance to youth. They will lead rehearsals whenever the choreographer is not on campus. Assistant choreographers will receive training in how to give notes to youth that help them grow while also supporting and nurturing their creative development. PREP SEASON (PART-TIME JANUARY THROUGH MID-JUNE, can be remote) Attend scheduled production meetings for each show you’re working on Attend staff trainings Participate in one-on-one calls with the camp director or other staff as needed Collaborate with production team to develop overarching vision for the show Participate in auditions, callbacks, and casting DURING CAMP (PART-TIME DURING THE SUMMER CAMP SESSION, in person) Attend camp rotations and post-camp meetings Review basic musical theatre steps to students of all ages Assist the choreographer with creating videos and posting notes on choreography so students can practice at home Collaborate the choreographer and other members of the creative team to create a cohesive and joyful show Mentor choreography interns in leading dance warm-ups and reviewing material with students Communicate schedule needs to the director and stage manager Polish songs leading into tech and performances Attend and support performances TO APPLY Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest and resume to PVTC.   • ADMINISTRATION & OPERATIONS ASSISTANTS
    The administrative and operations assistant will support the daily operations of summer camp on campus. From setup to sign-in, communication to ticketing, and audience experience the administrative and operations assistants will collaborate with staff, interns, students, and families to cultivate a fun and smooth camp experience. Successful applicants must be organized, detail-oriented, and enjoy communicating. They should be able to work independently and collaborate on group efforts. PVTC works across many platforms including Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, Dropbox, Canva, LucidPress, and Network for Good. REPORTS TO: Executive Director WAGES: $20-28/hour depending on experience PROJECT DATES: Production meetings monthly on Tuesdays at 1pm starting in January Prep as needed throughout the winter/spring Camp dates are June 20-August 11 Who should apply? Young professionals or college students interested in the administrative side of arts education programs are ideal candidates for this position. The job requires a little of everything - engagement with students, parents, PVTC staff, and high school interns! The admin/operations assistant completes many tasks throughout the day ranging from meaningful in-person interactions with camp participants to updating spreadsheets and prepping emails.
