STARLETS: Helping Hands (Grades K-1)
In this story based on The Little Gardener by Emily Hughes, a tiny gardener tries her best to tame enormous weeds that are overtaking her garden. She works herself into exhaustion and falls into a deep slumber. A group of local kids are profoundly impacted by a beautiful flower she creates, and take over the task of helping to create a blooming garden. When the tiny gardener awakens, she and her new helpers celebrate their beautiful green paradise.
RISING STARS: The Greener City (Grades 2-3)
Based on The Curious Garden by Peter Brown, this story follows a group of kids on their quest for a greener city. While out exploring one day, they discover a struggling group of weeds and decide to take care of them. With help of the sun, rain, and their green thumbs, the garden spreads throughout the gray city, inspiring the residents of this dreary world to come out and help. Together the community transforms their urban space into a lush, green world.
Mondays 8:30-9:30am (Grades 1-2) Las Lomitas Late Birds
JUNIOR STARS: Letters from the Gardener (Grades 4-8)
In this Depression-era story based on The Gardener by Sarah Stewart, a little girl named Lydia brings a suitcase full of seeds to the big city, where she goes to stay with her grumpy Uncle. Told through letters between Lydia's family at home on the farm and her new family in the city, we see the gradual transformation of a gloomy grey city into a blooming sanctuary. Proving that hard work, community, and a few seeds can lift up even the lowest of hopes.
