Onstage in STAGES this Spring: Acting the “Real World”

We are going to have so much fun! The spring session will be split into three areas of exploration:

1) Attendance of a professional production of "Being Ernest" at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley. This new musical adaptation will be entertaining and age-appropriate for all of our STAGES students. The date is Saturday, April 20 at 2pm. Students will study the play in the first two weeks of the session AND attend a backstage tour following the performance led by a TheatreWorks Professional. Student tickets are $25 and will be charged when students enroll in the spring STAGES program. A few parents will have the opportunity to chaperone and will be responsible for the cost of their ticket.

2) Audition to Impress. We want to ensure that our students are prepared for their theatrical lives after PVTC. Students who hope to (at some time) audition for plays at other venues in the future, or who wish to pursue theatre in high school, will benefit fro this portion of class because we will learn about a variety of useful audition techniques that can be applied to almost any future audition. At the end of the session, students will have the chance to give their audition for a panel of theatre directors who will give them useful, constructive feedback on their work.

3) A surprise appearance by a guest theatre professional who will give a workshop and provide insight into their area of theatre. Will it be a lighting designer? Stage combat instructor? Set designer? Someone else who creates magic onstage? You'll have to join us to find out!

General Information About our STAGES Program

STAGES ensembles are designed for young performers in grades 3-8 who are serious about theatre as an art form and who want to make a deep commitment to artistic growth. They yearn for the challenge to reach a high level of theatrical proficiency. Entry is by audition only.

We have high expectations for our STAGES ensemble members. In addition to having a passion for the performing arts, they must also demonstrate enthusiasm for working with a group. They must make theatre a priority in their lives by attending classes and workshops regularly, by memorizing lines and blocking promptly, and by participating in rehearsals with an inquisitive spirit. They must be able to focus, collaborate, listen, and share ideas. Of course, we seek students who love to play, use their imaginations, and challenge themselves physically and vocally.

There are seven STAGES ensembles. Placement in an ensemble is based not only on the experience and ability of a student, but also on the cohesion of an entire ensemble. Theatre at its best is a collaborative art and the STAGES directors take extra care in creating ensembles that value team work and celebrate the skills of all performers. Curriculum for each group is determined by the individuals involved with that ensemble at that time.

New students who would like to audition to join STAGES in Winter 2013 should email noelle@pvtc-ca.org.
